Birmingham City Council calls for discussion on public safety

BIRMINGHAM - AL -

The shooting death of 15-year-old Jermaine Walton has motivated the Birmingham City Council.

"Something needs to be done," LaShunda Scales said.

Scales says the current curfew needs to be better enforced. She also thinks it's the responsibility of parents to be more strict.

"I hope that what we do as parents...that we're monitoring where our children are going, who they're going out with," she said. "We know what time they're going and what time they're coming home."

But Councilman Steven Hoyt says he believes the answer is roadblocks.

"We can't do it one time and not do it the next time," he said. "You got to do it every day."

Years ago, he says it was a key factor in the decline of city crime. And with today's easy availability of guns, Hoyt believes it needs to be enforced again even if that means stepping over the line.

"I know the law says you can't profile," he said. "But if profiling is going to save some lives, I say 'Let's get busy'."

Something he, himself, is willing to put up with.

"I subject myself to that," he said. "I have never had a problem with it because I think it saves lives."
