Death row inmate passed away

An Alabama death row inmate has died.  Anthony Apicella was pronounced dead around 2:00 p.m. Monday.  Alabama corrections representatives say Apicella was suffering from liver disease and died while getting treatment at Donaldson Correctional Facility.  The official cause of death is pending autopsy results.

Apicella was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death out of Jefferson County on August 1, 1997 for the robbery and execution-style murder of five people.  It happened at the Changing Times Lounge in the Norwood Community.  He was 39 years old when he was sentenced.  Apicella served more than 15 years and seven months on Alabama's death row.   The jury that convicted Apicella, recommended he serve life in prison, but Jefferson County Circuit Judge James Garrett disagreed.  Garrett said because of the brutal nature of the crime, Apicella should get the maximum sentence.
