Fire danger until spring "greenup"

Posted: Updated:

Rainfall expected this week will help the wildfire situation in central Alabama, but it will take the spring "greenup" before the danger passes.

Coleen Vansant, with the Alabama Forestry Commission, compares the forest right now to the dry skin so many endure during the winter months. "Forest fuel is dry right now because of the warm weather and the low humidity," she said. Vansant added conditions Monday have improved simply because the humidity has gone up.

The Alabama Forest Commission is asking people to use extreme caution if an outdoor burn is required. Make certain you have enough people and equipment on hand to handle the flame. It is also always better to burn immediately after rainfall.

Wildfire activity this past week was high. Saturday, March 16, almost 80 fires burned statewide consuming 2,500 acres.
