SHILOH - AL -
Two juveniles caused at least $52,000 in damage after allegedly
setting a fire in an equipment barn on Heaton Road.
The fire happened Friday around midnight. The DeKalb County
Sheriff's Office says the two were playing in the barn when hay caught fire.
The children fled the scene when the fire got out of control. The barn was
destroyed, as well as some farm equipment and 275 rolls of hay. The value of
the damage is estimated to be $52,000. Juvenile officials spoke with
investigators, who turned the children back over to family members.
"I feel bad for the owners and the families of the
juveniles. We don't think this was malicious but there are still consequences.
I hope everyone can get this behind them and the kids learn from their
mistakes. This is a terrible loss for a farmer at this time of year," Sheriff
Jimmy Harris said.
The two must attend a hearing next week in juvenile court.
