"He does do the little sign language 'I love you' sign and he's been doing that the whole time," explained Tommy Sullivan.
His six year old boy loves super heroes. You can say its Thomas Sullivan's super heroic strength that's kept him fighting after doctors found a tumor the size of a plum inside of his head. " It's been an emotional roller coaster to watch a child go through that, " said Sullivan, clearly distraught at the thought of his sick son.
Doctors made the discovery in 2011. They removed the tumor and a short time later the cancer called medulloblastoma returned.
"We found more cancer cells and they started giving him seizures," explained Sullivan.
Strangers touched by the young boy's story decided to help. Friends of the family donated a football signed by players with the University of Alabama football team. The Sullivan's auctioned it off last week and were surprised when the person who won the football told them to keep the ball and donated the auction money.
" So, we took it to the second highest bidder and she said, 'Why are you contacting me? I didn't have the highest bid.' And so we explained to her what had happened. She did the same," said Sullivan.
The third bidder did the same thing. Strangers have also helped pay the family's bills and with Tommy Sullivan out of work every little bit helps.
"It brings you back real quick as far as knowing there are folks who genuinely do care...that love a stranger," said Sullivan, visibly touched by the thought of strangers helping his family.
Tommy says he's thankful to people in the community who are lending a hand when his family is in need. He just hopes the little boy he loves so much will make a full recovery to enjoy the bright future that lies ahead.
