The Etowah County Sheriff's Office says an inmate kitchen worker escaped the Etowah County Detention Center Friday morning.

Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson says officers stormed a bunker where a man was holding a child hostage last month because the man had told them something "real, real bad" was going to happen if they didn't meet his demands. However, Olson said he couldn't reveal the demands of 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes. But he says there was no way to meet them.

Olson says officers knew Dykes had an explosive device in the bunker where he was holding a little boy, and it was big enough to kill someone if it went off. Officers fatally shot Dykes and rescued the boy without the explosive device detonating.

Olson talked about the hostage situation while visiting the Legislature to discuss gun bills pending in the current session.
