Heisman trophy quarterback Johnny Manziel is in the process of taking out an insurance policy which will protect part of his football earning potential against the risk of injury.

"It's just a precaution," Manziel said Tuesday after Texas A&M's spring workout. "I think there's a lot of players who have done it in the past and you never know what could happen. Football is a dangerous sport, so you kind of have to make sure that you take a precaution in that regard."

The NCAA has a program which allows it's top student athletes among football and men's basketball, to receive up to $5 million in coverage.

Manziel will be eligible for the NFL draft after the 2013 season.

"I'm not leaning any way," Manziel said. "Whenever that decision comes, (I'll) have to sit there and evaluate it just like you do anything else in your life."

Texas A&M football begins it's second season in the SEC against Rice on Saturday, August 31st.
