ADHD not just a problem in children

Posted: Updated:

New research suggests Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is not just a problem for children.

A new study finds 30% of children diagnosed with A.D.H.D. show signs of the disorder into adulthood. Researchers at Boston Children's Hospital evaluated 232 adults who were diagnosed with A.D.H.D. as children. 29% met the criteria for adult A.D.H.D.

Dr. Mike Manos did not participate in the study but treats A.D.H.D. patients at Cleveland Clinic. Manos says she would accentuate the positive of the disorder.

"It would be fascinating and necessary now, to take a look at the cohort that adapted and find out what is it that they did that made their symptoms non-persistent? That made their symptoms non-problematic. That made them successful as adults."

The study also found children with A.D.H.D. may also be at higher risk for suicide later in life. Researchers also say 60% of adults with childhood A.D.H.D. had another psychiatric disorder in adulthood.
