Highlights Need for Congressional Term Limits
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This week marked the 62nd anniversary of the Twenty-second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution establishing Presidential term limits. The Twenty-second Amendment of the United States Constitution created a term limit for the President of the United States of two four-year terms. The amendment was ratified by three-fourths of the states on February 27, 1951. This anniversary, a $16.5 trillion national debt, and an inability to solve our fiscal problems in Washington D.C., highlight the need for Congressional terms limits.
If enacted, Congressional term limits would greatly benefit the country. Term limits have shown to have positive effects on legislative branches at both state and local levels. Term limits encourage competition and participation in elections. Also, term limits create legislative bodies that are more responsive to the needs of their citizens, which fosters an environment where politicians are less concerned with re-election and less beholden to special interests. In addition, Americans overwhelmingly support term limits for elected officials. In a January 2013 Gallup poll, three-fourths of Americans say they support term limits for Congress, while only 21 percent opposed them.
A leading proponent of Congressional term limits Senator David Vitter (R-La.) reaffirmed his support for term limits stating in a January 23, 2013 press release, "Not allowing individuals to remain in office for an eternity is an important step we need to take to restore confidence in Congress. . .call it Potomac Fever, or whatever you'd like, but the longer some folks are in Washington, the more taxpayer money they want to spend."
Our Generation applauds Senator Vitter's and others efforts to enact term limits legislation and urges Congress and the states to take swift action on the issue.
