Technology companies are trying to keep people safe in disasters.

The Mobile Guardian app lets you contact rescue workers with just a few taps on your smart phone screen.  In addition to sending a call for help, it also sends GPS coordinates.  The app even lets you contact friends through a contact list and social networking.  There's also a button you can use to let everyone know you're OK.

The Spare One emergency phone can help give you peace of mind if a disaster knocks out your power, and you can't charge your phone  It's loaded with a battery that is not activated until you pull a tab.  That gives it a long shelf life.  Even without mobile service configured, it can still dial 911.  If you put in your phone's SIM card, you can also dial other numbers.
