TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Alabama men's basketball team defeated Auburn 61-43 Tuesday night in Coleman Coliseum. Junior guard Trevor Releford had 21 points and sophomore forward Nick Jacobs had his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Alabama is now 19-9 overall and 11-4 in Southeastern Conference play.

"We talked about the importance of every game going forward, but obviously any time you get a chance to play your in-state rival that adds a different meaning," UA Head Coach Anthony Grant said. "Our guys were really locked in early; very similar to the last time we played them. From a defensive standpoint, I thought the first half we really controlled that. Offensively we really struggled to get shots to fall, but it was great to see the improvement that we've made from twenty days ago because we didn't let it rattle us."

Alabama led by just six points at the half, but pulled away after the break thanks to 46% (13-28) shooting from the field and 81.8% (9-11) from the free-throw line. The Tide outrebounded the Tigers 41-31, making it the second largest margin for Alabama on the year. Alabama is now 8-2 when outrebounding opponents.

The Tide had two other players in double-digits as sophomore guard Trevor Lacey had 12 points and freshman guard Retin Obasohan had 10 points to go along with a career-high four rebounds. Tigers forward Rob Chubb had 13 points and was the only AU player in double-digits.

"Trevor (Releford) did a great job tonight," Grant said. "He was locked in. He was focused. He was vocal. He was energetic. I thought it was contagious to our team. I thought Nick Jacobs came in and really gave us a boost. It was good to see different guys step up tonight, and be able to come out with the win."

Alabama had eight steals on the night, making them 16-3 when grabbing eight or more steals in a game. Releford had two steals which gives him 66 on the year, making him 10th on the all-time record list for steals in a season at Alabama. He had 60 as a freshman, which ranks seventh, and 64 last season, which ranks fourth. Releford is the only player in UA history to rank in the top 10 in steals in three different seasons.

Alabama plays again Saturday, March 2 in Gainesville, Fla. against the Florida Gators. The game will be televised by ESPN2 and the radio broadcast will be carried on the Crimson Tide Sports Network.

After 35 years on the job, August 25 could have been a Gadsden man's last shift for AT&T if it weren't for some Gadsden police officers. Danny Day collapsed while retrieving cable. His hard hat came off as he fell to the ground, and Day hit his head and began to bleed profusely. Two police officers, Josh Russell and Jason Coffman, were on patrol on Forrest Avenue. They drove past Day at the right time. "It happened so quickly, as we were approaching, I just saw a hard hat fall."More >>
