MONTGOMERY – James Spann, a hospital trustee with Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham, and chief meteorologist for ABC 33/40, was recently honored by the Alabama Hospital Association as its 2013 Trustee of the Year. Mr. Spann was one of two trustees selected for the award which is given to recognize exemplary service to hospitals, their patients and their communities.
According to Mike Horsley, president of the Alabama Hospital Association, trustees are a critical part of ensuring oversight and community engagement in a very complex industry. "Today's hospital trustees must not only be passionate about the hospital's mission, but also have a good understanding of how hospitals are operated and financed," said Horsley. "Being a hospital trustee takes a lot of time and it's a very critical role in the success of a hospital. We are grateful for leaders like Mr. Spann who are willing to give of their time and talents."
Spann has served as the chairman of the board at Trinity Medical Center since 2005 and is credited with providing the type of leadership that has helped Trinity succeed in many endeavors, including receiving national recognition by the Joint Commission as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures. He is also said to be the trustee who constantly encourages the board to be well-informed and diligent in their roles and has resulted in all Trinity board members becoming Certified Hospital Trustees.
"As a board member, Mr. Spann is responsive, available and supportive of making sure we deliver the highest quality of care in the most personalized manner possible," said L. Keith Granger, President and CEO of Trinity Medical Center. "He provides great inspiration and passion for any area of work he takes on and this is clearly represented in his work with Trinity Medical Center."
