Birmingham Fashion Week enters third year

BIRMINGHAM - AL -

For three years, Birmingham Fashion Week brings the bright lights and pizzazz of a New York City catwalk, to central Alabama.

The event puts local boutiques and designers on the same stage as their national counterparts.

It also showcases some of the creative minds and designs Birmingham has to offer.

What started out as dream by two local designers has become an event that involves the collaboration more than 800 people.

It has become so popular, that tickets for all eight shows sell out.

To give an idea of the growth, the first year featured just one runway show.
The next, it became three nights of runway shows. Now, it's a week long event of fashion that draws a crowd of more than 2,500 people.

"Birmingham fashion week is a huge event for our city. It's an amazing event that reaches out to the community," says event co-founder Heidi Elnora

Elnora and her friend Jeana Lee Fleming started Birmingham Fashion Week in 2011. Both are fashion designers with boutiques in Birmingham who thought, why can't "high fashion" have a southern spotlight?

"we wanted to give boutiques, fashion designers, high school kids, an opportunity to showcase their talent," explains Elnora. "There's not a platform here in the south really for designers. Everybody goes to New York City. You believe you have to be in New York to make it and that's not true."

From now until March 2, Pepper Place market on Birmingham's south side will be transformed into the center of the action.

The event features eight shows, showcasing the work of eight designers and seven boutiques.

Tickets for most shows sell out quickly and not all guests are fashionistas.

For the thousands of guests who do attend, they'll get to see the newest fashion designs, created in their backyard.

There are still some tickets available for Wednesday and Thursday night shows, you can get them online here.
