BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Students of Norwood Elementary School showed up to school Saturday morning. The students were among a group of volunteers helping to spruce up the outside of the elementary school by breaking ground on a new community garden.

The group helped build garden beds by stacking cinder blocks and dumping dirt.

"To see so many little kids here this morning was really wonderful because they actually gave up their cartoons to come. They're having such a great time in the dirt," said Jeanette Watters, principal at Norwood Elementary School.

Saturday's garden is the first of four planned community gardens in the Norwood neighborhood. The gardens are known as Norwood Learning Gardens and will ensure community members will have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The remaining three community gardens will be built on empty and neglected lots in the neighborhood.
