An economic development project in Irondale is moving full steam ahead. Wednesday afternoon, a train, which will soon be converted to a restaurant, rolled into Grants Mill Station.
Besides a few businesses on the property, the shopping center has been relatively empty for the past several years, but the area will soon be transformed into what city leaders call a tourist destination.
Mark Gold, a developer who previously developed Crestwood Festival Center, purchased the property, and more than 90 percent of the shopping center will be occupied with restaurants, shops and more.
The City of Irondale provided funds toward construction of a dog park, and the police department and water works system will both occupy spaces.
Gold plans to put a zip line and ropes course on the property, and construction should be complete in the next few months.
