Stop Hunger Now campaign kicks off in Mountain Brook

Posted: Updated:

For the third year, more than 2,000 local volunteers are packing meals for children in lesser-developed countries.

Thursday morning kicked off the annual Stop Hunger Now campaign at Canterbury United Methodist Church in Mountain Brook. The group's goal this year is to pack at least 500,000 meals for children in the African countries of Zambia and Burundi.

"We've got 2,000 people who might be thinking about it but probably aren't thinking about hungry children. But now they are thinking about it because they are packing [meals] and being part of the solution and part of making a difference in somebody's life who they might not know," Organizer Rachel Estes says.

The church will host a "power shift" Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The service project picks up again Thursday at 6:30 a.m. Each meal costs 25 cents to make.
