A group of young, Tulsa jazz musicians return from a national competition victorious.
The Tulsa Jambassadors returned from New York City Tuesday night. They were in the Big Apple to compete in the Charles Mingus High School Jazz Competition.
The band is made up of top students from Tulsa schools campuses.
The group took on two other schools, from Manhattan and San Francisco.
They came out of the contest with two outstanding soloists and the caption for "best saxophone section".
Their director, Doug Styers, said these accomplishments are a big deal.
"It's great for us," Styers said. "We opened the eyes of the people in New York to what we can bring jazz wise. A lot of them didn't really see what this Tulsa group is about, but when they heard us play it really opened them up."
Styers extends thanks to those donors who helped the band get to New York for this once in a lifetime experience.
