Cooper Green gets new name, county wants to hire

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Jefferson County wants to hire new Cooper Green employees now. It's asking a federal judge to exempt the urgent care center from a hiring freeze.

The county needs a new administrator and several nurse practitioners for the newly renamed Cooper Green Mercy Health Services.

Wednesday, a federal judge told the county it couldn't fill 112-positions until an order came down on the consent decree. That decree ensures fair hiring practices for women and African Americans. The county was back in court in December for violating that order.

The county argues Cooper Green doesn't fall under that decree.
