Fasting Facebook for Lent

Posted: Updated:

Lent is a time many Christians choose to sacrifice, to give up something for these 40 days culminating with Easter.

On Facebook, several people are posting that they decided to give up the social media site for Lent.

Facebook has become a big part of many people's lives. Now, people are sacrificing, learning to live without it for these next few weeks.

For some, Facebook can become an addiction. Some spend hours on the social media site everyday.

Theologians say that it almost gets to the point of idolatry.

Dr. Lyle Dorsett a professor at Samford's Beeson School of Divinity says technology has gotten in the way of relationships with God and with other people.

And that giving up Facebook, shows a willingness to improve those relationships.

"I would think some person who is really into Facebook. To give up Facebook is a pretty big thing to give up," says Dorsett. "The purpose of any spiritual discipline is to get closer to (Christ), get more filled with Him. So that we can live lives that bring glory to Him."

For those giving up Facebook for Lent, most say they will be back on the site Easter which is March 31 or the day after.
