More money for transition, possible name change for Cooper Green

Posted: Updated:

The Jefferson County Commission changed Cooper Green Mercy Hospital to an urgent care center with the plan to save money. But, Tuesday, a new proposal seeks to spend more money to finish the transition.

County manager Tony Petelos wants to give the consultant, who is heading up the change, more than $170,000 to finish the job. Petelos says the county still has to negotiate contracts with doctors, suppliers and other agencies.

But not all commissioners support the idea. Commissioner George Bowman says he doesn't know where the money will come from.

Petelos also proposed changing the name of Cooper Green Mercy Hospital to Cooper Green Health Services.

Commissioner Bowman and Commissioner Sandra Little Brown want to keep the word "mercy" in the same.

Commissioners will vote on the proposals during Thursday's meeting.
