Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM - AL -

The Internal Revenue Service today reminded tax filers in the Birmingham area that more than 20 local tax help sites are open now and site workers are preparing and e-filing tax returns for free.

These community sites are staffed by IRS-trained and certified volunteers and offer free tax help to filers whose household income was below $51,000 in 2012 or who file a fairly simple tax return.

These help sites include a two-day-only site at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6690 Cahaba Valley Rd. in Birmingham. Free tax help will be provided by appointment Fri., Feb. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sat., Feb. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 205-437-2712 for an appointment.

Another site at Agape Christian Church, 2025 Chapel Patton Rd. in Hoover, is offering free tax help for Spanish-speaking filers every Saturday through April 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment only. Call 205-547-6325 weekdays for a Saturday appointment.

There are more than 20 free tax help sites in Jefferson County alone. Filers can call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-906-9887 or visit www.irs.gov and search for "Volunteer Tax Help" to find the closest site.

To have your tax return prepared at one of these sites, bring the following information with you:

  • Proof of identification – Picture ID
  • Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse and dependents
