The Internal Revenue Service today reminded tax filers in
the Birmingham area that more than 20 local tax help sites are open now and
site workers are preparing and e-filing tax returns for free.
These community sites are staffed by IRS-trained and
certified volunteers and offer free tax help to filers whose household income
was below $51,000 in 2012 or who file a fairly simple tax return.
These help sites include a two-day-only site at Asbury
United Methodist Church, 6690 Cahaba Valley Rd. in Birmingham. Free tax help
will be provided by appointment Fri., Feb. 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sat.,
Feb. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 205-437-2712 for an appointment.
Another site at Agape Christian Church, 2025 Chapel Patton
Rd. in Hoover, is offering free tax help for Spanish-speaking filers every
Saturday through April 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by appointment only. Call
205-547-6325 weekdays for a Saturday appointment.
There are more than 20 free tax help sites in Jefferson
County alone. Filers can call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-906-9887 or visit www.irs.gov and search for "Volunteer Tax
Help" to find the closest site.
To have your tax return prepared at one of these sites,
bring the following information with you:
- Proof of identification – Picture ID
- Social Security Cards for you, your
spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by
the Social Security Administration or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
(ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse and dependents
- Birth dates for you, your spouse and
dependents on the tax return
- Wage and earning statement(s) Form
W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers
- Interest and dividend statements
from banks (Forms 1099)
- A copy of last year's federal and
state returns, if available
- Proof of bank account routing
numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check
- Total paid for daycare provider and
the daycare provider's tax identifying number (the provider's Social Security
Number or the provider's business Employer Identification Number) if
appropriate
- To file taxes electronically on a
married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the
required forms.
