Raymond Louis Smith III, age 43, was taken into custody during a traffic stop in the 5400 block of Highway 280. Smith was initially arrested on an outstanding warrant for Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. This incident occurred in January and involved Smith providing alcohol to a 16 year old female.
At the time of the arrest, search warrants were also served on Smith's business, Premier Mega Tan, and at his residence located in the 2100 block of Brook Highland Ridge.
Three adult dogs and eight puppies were taken from Smith's residence and turned over to the Shelby County Humane Society for safekeeping. One dead puppy was also found in the home. Three other live puppies were recovered from the closed business on Doug Baker Boulevard.
An additional warrant for Cruelty to Animals was obtained at the Shelby County Magistrate's office. Total bond on the 2 misdemeanor charges was $4,000.00. Smith was transferred from the Hoover City Jail to the Shelby County Jail on Thursday February 7th. He was released later that day after posting bond on the 2 charges.
Detectives continue to investigate this case, including the examination of evidence seized during the search warrants. Additional charges are possible. Anyone with further information concerning this case is encouraged to call Family Services Lt. Harry Long at 205-739-7440.
