BCRI Accepting Applications for Legacy Youth Program.

The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is now accepting applications for its Legacy Youth Leadership Program.  The program, which focuses on integrating diverse learning styles and encouraging critical thinking, is open to students in grades 9-12.  The deadline to apply is February 22nd.

 The program is supported by PNC bank.  It is designed to promote self-confidence, self-esteem, character, and community involvement.

Students in the program attend a series of 10 weekly participatory workshops.  The workshops help build students' knowledge base of BCRI's galleries, archives, and public programs through three segments.  Students also attend BRRI public programs and visit colleges.  Students who successfully complete the program will service as tour guides at the BCRI.  Students are then expected to continue to service as volunteers at the Institute through high school.

The program was created to recognize the role that children played in the Civil Rights movement.  Last year, students in the program guided  tours for 39 groups and over 1,000 visitors.

 Eighty-three students have completed the LYLP since its inception in 2008.
