Time and money burned waiting in traffic

Posted: Updated:

A quick trip downtown can easily turn into an hour or two because of traffic congestion. It can be frustrating, but a newly released survey shows Americans are coming to accept the delays as a part of living.

The Texas A&M Transportation Institute's annual survey of more than 400 cities in the United States finds that Americans now waste almost three billion gallons of gasoline each year simply waiting for traffic to move.

That is enough gasoline to fill the New Orleans Super Bowl four times! Break it down even more, it comes to $800 dollars per year per U.S. driver.

Traffic is such a problem that most of us allow one hour for a trip that should take 20 minutes without traffic. Every city has its own unique traffic issues. There are no simple solutions to a society that calls itself "mobile" but often finds itself sitting still because so many of us are on the road.
