Lawmakers face tough budget decisions

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY - AL -

The gavel goes down on the Alabama legislative session Tuesday. Once again, lawmakers will be faced with tough budget decisions.

It appears as if the 146 million dollars being moved from the state savings account to the general fund this year won't be enough to spare agencies from cuts. For yet another year, state agencies will be asked to trim five to ten percent. Part of it's to account for higher employee health insurance and retirement costs.

Last September, Alabama voters said yes to a constitutional amendment that allows approximately 146 million to be transferred into the general fund each year for the next three years.

Police in Gadsden are trying to return hundreds of stolen items to their rightful owners. Captain Paul Cody said officers bust a large fencing operation this week. Joe Pearl, 75, is the suspect in the case. It took a long time to sort through and document a very wide range of stolen property. "We've collected a lot of stuff," Cody said. "Toilet paper. We have non-firearms related weapons, we have karaoke machines, musical instruments, car stereos, underwear."More >>
