The Bessemer Police Department opened its firing range to the public for the first time Saturday.
The range is open to the public on the first Saturday of every month between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m..
Those interested in shooting at the range are required to present a valid photo identification card or a current drivers license. Police officers say you must bring your own unloaded firearm and ammunition, and instruction on the rules of the range will be given prior to anyone shooting.
Officer Richard Jaynes with the Bessemer police says, "You might run across a weapon that you see on the ground and you need to know safety wise how to handle that weapon and who to contact. And as far as shooting, most of everybody has a weapon in their house and they need to have the proper training on how to use that weapon."
The range is located on Mountain Road in Bessemer.
