What's up with that? Bone marrow donor registry

Each year, thousands of people are diagnosed with blood cancers like leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases.

For many, their only hope rests with a bone marrow transplant from a matching donor.

One of our viewers is waiting on a match. She wrote to us in a "What's up with That?" post.

Dawn carter says: "there is a need for more people to join the national bone marrow registry! I'm waiting on a donor!"

Carter has multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells. Bone marrow transplants are used to treat more than 70 illnesses, including some immune disorders. That's why doctors and health advocates are trying to dispel myths, they say, keep many people from joining the donor registry.
