No More SEC/Big East Basketball Challenge

Posted: Updated:

The SEC/Big East Challenge is over.

Big East commissioner Mike Aresco announced the news Monday afternoon, and SEC spokesman Craig Pinkerton confirmed the end of the basketball rivalry.

"Playing an event such as the SEC/Big East Challenge has provided a great opportunity to highlight our teams as well as the sport early in the season," Pinkerton told the Birmingham News. "We are continuing to explore our options for continuing an event like this."

The SEC/Big East Challenge began six years ago. It started small, with four marquee games between the top teams in each conference.

The series grew to 12 games each of the past two seasons.

Big East basketball is undergoing a major shift in membership, as at least nine schools will leave for another conference before next season.
