College graduates overqualified for jobs

Posted: Updated:

In the 1970's, it was hard to find a taxi driver or firefighter with a college degree.  That is not the case today.  In fact, 48 percent of college grads in the United States are overqualified for their jobs. That's from a study released Monday by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity.

There are more than 41 million college graduates in the United States, which is significantly larger than the number of jobs requiring a college degree.  That number is currently more than 28 million, according to the 2010 Labor Department data.

The findings point to a growing disconnect between what employers need and the kind of graduates that institutions of higher learning are churning onto the job market.  Researchers see this as a trend.  They are also predicting the underemployment problem is going to get worse in the future.
