JeffCo asks federal judge for permission to hire now

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Jefferson County has another emergency on its hands. This one involves staffing.

The county currently needs to immediately fill fourteen positions including eight clinical nurse practitioners for Cooper Green, two principal buyers, a chief deputy coroner, medical transcriber, chief court clerk and principal court clerk.

A federal judge has put the county under a hiring freeze until a final order comes down on the consent decree. That order put measures in place to ensure fair hiring practices among women and African Americans.

However, Jefferson County was taken back to court in December for failing to uphold all the measures.

In court documents filed this week, the county says most of the qualified applicants for the jobs are females and African Americans. It would use random selection to fill the spots.
