It's been one year, since an E-F 3 tornado ripped through Clay and Pinson.

On Saturday, residents from both communities gathered to celebrate how far they've come and to honor the memory of one who lost her life during the storm.

With a proclamation by the City of Clay, 16-year-old Christina Heichelbech will forever be remembered.

"Knowing that she's remembered, and that her legacy will go on, and the good that she did, will be remembered. Means a lot to us," says her father Darrell.

Darrell and her mother Carol say there were times they thought of leaving Clay after the tragedy.

"The support we received from the community, made it easy to stay," says Heichelbech.

Community members gathered with the Heichelbech family at Cosby Lake. Commemorating the tornado on January 23, 2012.

Charles Webster, Mayor of the City of Clay says the community has come together in the last year.

"That's one of our goals is to bring this neighborhood together, even closer than it has been," says Webster.

While a lot has improved in a year, Webster will say there's still more to be done.

"It's very encouraging for the city to see all the progress that has been made. And I hope that all the citizens who did have damage see that and the progress that we've made to be able to move on with their lives," says Webster.

The commemoration included resolutions from the governor's office as well as the state senate.
