MCCALLA - AL -

State Fire Marshals are still trying to determine exactly what caused the fire that claimed the life of a McCalla man late Thursday night.

41-year old Michael Joe Pierce and his mother were trapped in their mobile home when the flames began.  Pierce's wife managed to escape.

"She was just yelling that they're still in the house," said neighbor Joseph Fleming.

Fleming ran to rescue Pierce and his mother.  He tried to break out one window but the flames were just too in tense, so then..."I took a rock and broke out the other trying to see and then I saw feet.  So, we began taking out the glass around the frame of the window.  I got him out."

Another neighbor with Fleming started performing CPR on Pierce while Fleming pulled out his mother.  She survived but Pierce died from his injuries.

Firefighters believe the blaze started somewhere around the washer and dryer in the front of the mobile home.  But, an exact cause of the fire has not been determined.

As of Friday evening, Pierce's mother 58-year old Elizabeth Hilton was listed in stable condition at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.
