In an effort to engage the West End community, dozens of Birmingham police officers walked several streets Wednesday morning to meet and greet citizens.

"The police department can only do so much," said Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper. "My job as chief is to make sure that we do everything we can, but to have great success, we are going to need great partnerships."

The walk was part of the department's Operation Closeout, which ends Friday. Operation Closeout began before the holidays and targeted high crime areas. Since November, officers have made six murder arrests.

Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper and Mayor William Bell participated in the walk.

"We're looking at beefing up special units in the police department," said Mayor Bell. "You've also got to put the leather on the streets, and that's what this is about."

Chief Roper plans to hold more walks in the Birmingham area this year.
