Hands On Birmingham coordinated dozens of service projects throughout the Birmingham area for its 13th annual MLK Jr. Day of Service.

Monday afternoon, around 50 volunteers spent hours sprucing up Birmingham's Downey Park.

"We're here to give them a good working volleyball court, to resurface the basketball court, clean up, and paint," said Hands On Birmingham board member Sean Jones. "Hopefully it allows them to maybe bring some family and friends down to enjoy the park a little bit better."

From Saturday to Monday, 48 service projects ranging from spending time with senior citizens to cleaning up area parks were planned.
