MLK events around Central Alabama

Martin Luther King, Jr Day will usher in a national day of service, rallies, the 100 day of a non-violence campaign and the kick off of a year long commemoration of Birmingham's Civil Rights Movement.

Birmingham's year of remembrances begins at the 27th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior Unity Breakfast. It's the nation's oldest unity breakfast. The theme is "Birmingham Unity: Building on the Legacy of 1963."

Hands on Birmingham needs volunteers to help spruce-up city parks. The 13th annual MLK Day of Service will be at Marconi Park on 25th Street North and Downey Park on Dublin Avenue until 4 pm.

Birmingham City Councilman Jay Roberson's 100 Days of Non-Violence campaign will end with a Samaritan's Feet shoe distribution at A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club and Wylam K-8 School from 8 until 10 am. It will be followed by a college fair at Boutwell Auditorium from 10 am until 2 pm.

During that same time, there will be a gospel showcase at Boutwell featuring Ruben Studdard.

Also in Birmingham at 12:15 pm, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference will hold a march. It starts at Birmingham City Hall and ends at the 16th Street Baptist Church with a rally. The group will also hold a MLK Lovefest for the homeless and senior citizens at 3 pm at Boutwell.

In Anniston, the Good Choice Program will hold its 11th Annual MLK Jr. breakfast and youth participation day. It starts at 9 am at the Anniston City Meeting Center. All city and Calhoun County schools are invited to participate. A cash prize will be given to the class with the largest participation.

The Walker County branch of the NAACP is holding the King Day March for Non-Violence at noon at A.P. Howell Park. It will end at the Percy L. Goode Community Center.

There will be a MLK celebration at Bessemer City Hall at 2 pm.
