BIRMINGHAM - AL -

Birmingham Metro Diversity Coalition's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity walk started at 12pm Saturday.

The walk was in honor of the accomplishments of history by celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1963 civil rights movement and to promote healthy living all at once.

"We're trying to make people more aware of what they can do and how they can become more active in the community and just help lift us all up," says Velma Williams with the Diversity Coalition.

Birmingham's celebration of the 50th anniversary of the civil rights movement will continue throughout the year.
