Shady Grove Road murder suspect in custody

Jesse Lee Boyd charged with murder of Charles Smothers.

Jesse Boyd, of Adamsville, has been taken into custody for the January 5 murder of his cousin, Charles Smothers. Boyd originally stated that he discovered the body in the 2200 block of Shady Grove Road about 25 feet off the road. Smothers had been shot once in the head. Boyd stated he was searching for Smothers as a favor to his mother.

Inconsistencies in Boyd's statement about discovering the body led Sheriff's detectives to suspect he may have been involved in the homicide. Detectives developed enough information to determine that Boyd had murdered Smothers. Boyd has denied any involvement in Smothers' death.

Boyd is also charged with theft of property after it was discovered that he stole the victims' truck and burned it to cover up the murder.
