Second-ranked Alabama got off to a sizzling start against top-ranked Notre Dame, racing out to a 28-0 first-half lead behind its punishing rushing attack and quarterback AJ McCarron's two touchdown passes.

The Fighting Irish won the coin toss, deferring to the second half, a decision Brian Kelly is likely regretting as he attempts to reassemble his deflated team in the lockerroom at the half.

Eddie Lacey's 20-yard gash through the heart of the Irish defense gave Alabama an early 7-0 lead, and set the tone of the game with all the momentum on Nick Saban's sideline. Lacey would finish the half with 96 yards rushing on just 12 attempts.

Alabama went up 14-0 in the first quarter after McCarron capped off a 10-play, 61-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown toss to a wide open Michael Williams in the back of th endzone.

Freshman running back T.J. Yeldon kicked off the second quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run, extending his team's lead to 21-0 over Notre Dame. He has 41 yards on 10 attempts.

Lacey put Alabama up 28-0 with just 31 seconds remaining in the second quarter after taking a McCarron check down pass over the middle 11-yards for a score. McCarron is 12-18 passing for 156 yards and two touchdowns.

Kelly's offense, led by redshirt freshman quarterback Everett Golson, has struggled to move the ball against an aggressive Alabama defense. The Irish have only 124 yards of total offense in the game, and just 31 on the ground.

Golson is 8-16 passing for 93 yards.
