Alabama head coach Nick Saban discussed his decision to send two freshmen home from the BCS National Championship in South Florida on Saturday.
Linebackers Dillon Lee and Ryan Anderson were sent back to Tuscaloosa for curfew violations, and Saban said it was a difficult decision, but one that is in the best interest of the players.
"It was more difficult for me to carry this out, maybe more than even the players." Saban said during media day at Sun Life Stadium. "I don't really ever want to do anything that hurts a player. But does this hurt a player? Or does this help a player understand the consequences for not doing what has been defined for you to do?"
Both Lee and Anderson were highly-rated prospects coming out of high school, Anderson, a teammate of T.J. Yeldon at Daphne High last year, was a five-star outside linebacker prospect, but he is expected to be redshirted after not seeing the field this season.
Lee appeared in eight games for Alabama playing inside linebacker in a limited role. He recorded an interception in the Crimson Tide's first game in 2012, a 41-14 win over Michigan in Dallas.
