Customers of Birmingham Water Works who live in the western area of the system along U.S. Highway 78 no longer must boil water before drinking.
The alert was lifted mid-morning Friday, after rigorous testing verified the safety of the drinking water.
The problem began earlier this week when the Birmingham Water Works distribution system experienced a 16-inch water main break along U.S. Highway 78 in Forestdale. The damage resulted in the loss of water pressure to a number of neighborhoods and towns in the western area of the water system.
