Sylacauga murder investigation

Posted: Updated:

Paramedics tried to save a Sylacauga man found bleeding on his front porch on Morris Avenue Saturday night.

A neighbor heard 67-year-old Ray Fednanders yell for help around six o'clock. He was pronounced dead at Coosa Valley Medical Center and police are calling his death a homicide.

Investigators worked throughout the night processing the crime scene and working leads towards a possible suspect. They believe his death may have been the result of an assault with an edged weapon.

"He'd certainly be here, be sitting back here in one of the corners back here." The family of 67-year-old Ray Fednanders was among the prayers at Unity Free Will Baptist Church in Sylacauga. Deacon Donnie Blackmon said, "He'll be missed tonight."

Because of a senseless tragedy Saturday night, Fednanders will never again walk through these doors or read his bible. He lived just down the street from the church, attending Wednesday and Sunday services. "Anytime he would hear that, I would be trying to raise money to help bury somebody or buy a monument he was always willing to help."

Even bought things for the church and neighbors say the generosity didn't end there. Ronald Tyler said, "He would help you with anything you needed help with, if he could."

Tyler ran to help his friend after a neighbor called 9-1-1. "They had cut him up real bad, stabbed him, cut him down across his face."

Sylacauga Police are not releasing many details about the homicide investigation, but those who loved and respected Fednanders are hopeful for an arrest. Blackmon says "Certainly we would have everybody listening to pray for our community and church that we can be the light and witness we need to be in this difficult time."

Investigators do have a person of interest at this time, however that information is not being released.
