Alabamians worried about looming fiscal cliff

Posted: Updated:

America is three days away from going over the fiscal cliff, and Alabamians are on the edge as time dwindles on the political stalemate in Washington. At risk: deep cuts in unemployment benefits for thousands of people who are out of work and large tax increases for those working.

President Barack Obama spoke Friday urging immediate action. However, he is optimistic a deal can be reached.

While there is no guarantee of an agreement, Republicans and Democrats both believe there will be some sort of compromise. House members head back to Washington Sunday to get to work.

"It's very disturbing that we're letting partisan politics in Washington hold hostage the American people," said Congresswoman Terri Sewell, (D) Alabama.

Governor Robert Bentley said up to 24,000 jobs could be cut if a compromise fails.
