An overturned tanker truck carrying gasoline has shut down all lanes of Interstate 65 North near the 3rd Avenue South on-ramp in Birmingham.

The accident happened around 7 p.m. Friday night.

The truck blocked all northbound lanes of the interstate after wrecking, and at least one person has been sent to the hospital. A Hazmat team was also called to the scene to assist in cleaning up the fuel that was spilled.

Traffic behind the accident was being evacuated away from the scene.

We will provide more updates as more information is made available.

An estimated 50 people were evacuated from their cars near the accident and transit buses were called in to transport bystanders to a safe location until they can retrieve their vehicles.

Sand trucks were also called to the scene to help with fuel-spill cleanup and containment.

"The tanker truck did over turn, it ruptured spilled some of its product. We do know that it was transporting gasoline. At this particular time we have quarried off the area we've evacuated several of the occupants of the vehicles that were in the immediate area"

The truck was carrying over 8,000 gallons of fuel before the accident.
