All lanes open to traffic after overturned tanker truck shuts down I-65N (updates)

BIRMINGHAM - AL -

An overturned tanker truck carrying gasoline has shut down all lanes of Interstate 65 North near the 3rd Avenue South on-ramp in Birmingham.

The accident happened around 7 p.m. Friday night.

The truck blocked all northbound lanes of the interstate after wrecking, and at least one person has been sent to the hospital. A Hazmat team was also called to the scene to assist in cleaning up the fuel that was spilled.

Traffic behind the accident was being evacuated away from the scene.

We will provide more updates as more information is made available.

Update #1:

A female driving a small sedan was involved in the accident with the overturned tanker truck. She was taken to UAB Hospital. The man driving the truck was also taken to UAB.

The accident victims' conditions are unknown at this time.

Update #2:

An estimated 50 people were evacuated from their cars near the accident and transit buses were called in to transport bystanders to a safe location until they can retrieve their vehicles.

Sand trucks were also called to the scene to help with fuel-spill cleanup and containment.

Update #3:

Birmingham Fire Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis reports:

"The tanker truck did over turn, it ruptured spilled some of its product. We do know that it was transporting gasoline. At this particular time we have quarried off the area we've evacuated several of the occupants of the vehicles that were in the immediate area"

The truck was carrying over 8,000 gallons of fuel before the accident.

Update #4:

The Alabama Department of Transportation reports that both northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 65 are closed near the University Blvd. exit (259) and are expected to remain closed overnight for cleanup of fuel spilled from the overturned tanker truck.

Jefferson County EMA, State Troopers, local law enforcement and the Alabama Department of Transportation are on the scene.

Update #5:

Alabama Department of Transportation advises all northbound and southbound lanes are now open to traffic.
