Inmate pleads guilty in tax fraud scheme

Posted: Updated:

Federal authorities say an inmate serving a 10-year prison sentence has pleaded guilty to committing tax fraud while behind bars.
Officials say David Marrero filed various false documents to the Internal Revenue Service and claimed a tax return of over $2.7 million. Authorities say Marrero fraudulently claimed that several companies withheld federal taxes from him. Officials say Marrero used other people's financial documents without their knowledge to file the fraudulent claims.
Officials did not provide information on how Marrero obtained the documents.  Authorities say Marrero will spend an additional 46 months in federal prison. The offense carries a maximum fine of $250,000. Marrero's sentencing date has not been set.
