Victoryland to reopen Tuesday afternoon

SHORTER-AL -

VictoryLand casino in Shorter plans to reopen Tuesday afternoon at 2p.m.  It closed in 2010 under pressure from then Gov. Bob Riley's anti-gambling task force.

Attorney Joe Espy said workers have installed 1,200 gambling machines for the restart.  The Macon County Sheriff inspected the machines last week and said he believed the machines were "legal" electronic bingo.

The casino will reopen without a liquor license, however. It applied for one, but the state liquor control agency held up action after Attorney General Luther Strange filed a protest.

VictoryLand was once Alabama's largest casino with more than 6,000 machines.
