Gun sales on the rise in Birmingham area

Gun regulation is what some lawmakers believe our country needs in the wake of the Connecticut school shootings. Many lawmakers want to ban the sale of assault weapons and plan to introduce legislation to do so, but some gun owners claim that's not the answer to curbing violence.

In light of potential future regulation, gun owners flocked to local gun shops this past weekend. At Hoover Tactical Firearms in Hoover, the general manager said sales skyrocketed.

"Saturday, we sold more handguns by 2 pm than I normally sell in a week," said general manager Austin Cook. "I think a lot of people are scared about what's to come with possible gun bans."

At The Gun Cellar in Moody, owner Amy Royer echoed the increase in sales.

"Everyone is afraid of home invasions and crime and everyone's also motivated by the government having limits on guns," said Royer.

But many believe gun regulation is key to combating school shootings and violence across the country. One Facebook user in response to an ABC 33/40 question on gun regulation wrote: "No one needs an assault rifle with extended round clips for hunting or protection. No one but our military."

The United States has an estimated $200 million guns in circulation.
