Deputy assaulted during robbery arrest

Posted: Updated:

Deputies responded to a home in the 1500 block of 3rd St NW just after midnight Sunday night to investigate a report of a burglary in progress. The caller said that a burglary had just happened and the suspects were leaving the scene in a black Chevrolet HHR.

A black Chevrolet HHR was found a short time later at a convenience store in the 1100 block of Center Point parkway. Deputies found that the tag on the vehicle had been switched and was not issued to the vehicle.

Deputies separated the two suspects, seating them in separate patrol cars, while they conducted the investigation into the burglary and the switched tag. A check of the vehicle identification number revealed that the car had been reported stolen to the Birmingham Police Department.

The suspects were identified as a 17 year old and 18 year old Dewayne Devon Thomas, both of Birmingham. When deputies opened the door to the patrol car to speak to the 17 year old, he attacked the deputy and knocked him to the ground. The suspect was handcuffed and placed back in the car.

It was then learned that the burglary had actually happened in the 1300 block of 3rd Place NW, which is within the Birmingham City Limits. The teens were taken to the Center Point substation where a detective with the Birmingham Police Department came to question them.

The 17 year old admitted to stealing the car, and both admitted to committing the burglary.

The 17 year old was charged with Receiving Stolen Property 1st Degree and Assault 2nd Degree on a Law Enforcement Officer. He was transported to the Jefferson County Youth Detention Facility.

18 year old Dewayne Devon Thomas has been turned over to Birmingham Police, where he will face charges related to the burglary.
