ANNISTON - AL -

A Heflin police officer who was shot during a two county police chase is recovering. A state trooper and deputy may have saved his life.

The Heflin Police Department says Officer Jackie Stovall was removed from a breathing machine Sunday and is in stable condition.

A picture was posted onto the department's Facebook page of State Trooper John Lewis holding Stovall's hand. Lewis and Cleburne County Deputy Jamie Cofield are being credited for saving Stovall's life.

Lewis applied pressure to the main artery where the bullet hit.

The Cleburne County Sheriff's Office is still trying to verify the identity of three people shot to death Saturday in the Guzman Trailer Park in Heflin.

The man believed to be responsible for the deaths and injuring a child lead police on chase along Highway 78. That's when he crashed at Leon Smith Parkway and opened fire on the officers. Stovall was hit in the leg.

Police say the man carjacked another vehicle and headed into Anniston. He hit a vehicle on Beck Road in Coldwater and was shot and killed by the Oxford SWAT Team.

The man's name has not been released.

The condition of the child is also unknown.
