A man was shot and killed by Oxford SWAT officers in Coldwater Saturday, ending a wild police pursuit that began after the shooting of four people in Heflin, including a small child.

A spokesman with the Alabama State Troopers confirmed that three people died during the shooting and the child was airlifted to a hospital.

Following the shooting at the trailer, the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle traveling on Highway 9, leading Heflin Police officers and Cleburne County Sheriff's deputies on a chase into Oxford.

The suspect crashed his vehicle near the Oxford Exchange Shopping Center then opened fire on police, wounding one Heflin Police officer in the leg. The man then continued to run after carjacking another vehicle, heading west towards Coldwater.

Oxford SWAT picked up the chase and followed the suspect until he was involved in another accident near the intersection of Highway 78 and Beck Road.

The man was shot and killed by SWAT officers at the accident scene after he attempted to reach for his gun. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Oxford Police Chief Bill Partridge reports that the Heflin Police officer shot during the chase was transported to the Regional Medical Center in Anniston. The officer underwent surgery for a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg.

There is no word yet on the condition of the child who was airlifted to the hospital.
